The War of 1812 was a complex war between France, and Great Britain and its European allies. The U.S. and Canada (because it was a British territory) were kind of dragged into the mess even though it didn't have that much to do with them.
In North America the war was played out mainly by several American attacks on Canada and a couple of British attacks on the U.S. Several different topics came out of the war.
- Burning of York
- Burning of Washington
- Battle of New Orleans
- Battle of Queenston Heights
- Battle of Crysler's Farm
- General Roger Sheaffe
- General Isaac Brock
Break off into groups of 3 (or 4 in at least one case) and pick one of the topics listed above. Investigate it thoroughly using the information linked there, additional information here and anything else you may need to research whether on the Internet or in the school library.
Once you've done that, pretend you are reporters living at the time of the War of 1812. Write a few articles on your topic (at least one for each member of your group).Half your articles should be written from the point of view of the Canadians/British and half from the point of view of the Americans.
Type up your articles. Bring them together and neatly format them in a newspaper style.
